App Design: Waste Watchers

Worcester Polytechnic Institute

This collaborative project proposal was completed in 7 weeks in the WPI class titled ‘Creating Value through Innovation.’

Final Mockups

Our goal with the WasteWatchers app is to provide the WPI community with a way to view their personal waste statistics, and educate themselves on the proper ways to reduce their waste.

Overview

  • Project focuses on improving WPI's waste disposal system by working with WPI Green Team

  • Two main issues are lack of communication/awareness and lack of motivation to recycle properly

  • Proposed solution is to implement a waste tracking app, “Waste Watchers” and develop and install smart bins around campus to encourage better recycling habits

Benefits

  • Main benefits are for sustainability and environmental care rather than monetary gain

  • Recycling reduces waste sent to landfills, conserves resources, prevents pollution, creates jobs

  • A project like this, successfully implemented, could improve WPI's reputation by being ground zero for this recycling technology

Costs

  • Main costs would be purchasing and installing new smart bins with built-in tracking technology

  • Developing the Waste Watchers app would also be a significant cost

  • Maintenance of smart bins

  • WasteWatchers app upkeep

  • Although expensive, this technology could greatly increase sustainability at WPI and set an example for other schools
